Diversity and Nature, One Stop from Downtown: Living in Mimico

Considered to be one of the most desirable Toronto neighbourhoods, Mimico is located in south Etobicoke, just moments away from downtown Toronto. With its diverse housing options and proximity to nature, it’s a proverbial haven for those who want to have their cake and eat it too.

The Properties

If you could choose one word to describe the real estate in Mimico, it would be “diverse.” The area has a variety of property types available from single-family detached homes, bungalows, townhouses, high-rise condos, and low-rise condos. Most properties retain a historic aesthetic, as most homes here were built mid-century. Although Mimico is perfectly nestled along the shores of Lake Ontario, most homes are situated further away from the lake, so waterfront properties here are rare. However, nearby Humber Bay Shores offers many new condo towers that have incredible panoramic lakeside views.

The Neighbours

Its diverse range of properties and its proximity to downtown make Mimico ideal for a variety of homebuyers. Young and established professionals love that downtown Toronto is only a 15-minute GO Train ride, and retired residents love the local amenities and quiet, small-town ambience. Mimico is a safe, family-friendly neighbourhood, and therefore, attracts young families, professionals, and retirees alike. This neighbourhood is truly diverse. Many residents are health-conscious and Mimico’s excellent bike paths and trails provide the perfect opportunity for outdoor enthusiasts to get outside–and Mimico is full of people who do exactly that!

The Mimico GO Station is a short walk away for many residents and Toronto proper is accessible by a 15-minute train ride. The Gardiner Expressway, Highway 427, and Lake Shore Boulevard are also easily accessible for drivers. The streetcar along Lake Shore is also a beautiful and scenic way to get into the city if you aren’t in a hurry.

Outdoor Recreation

There’s a reason why Mimico is sometimes called The Beach of the West End. The area is nestled on the shores of Lake Ontario with beautiful beaches, lakefront paths and walking trails and plenty of green space. Mimico residents love spending time in nature and they have the perfect setting to do so. The Waterfront Trail is a cyclist’s dream and there are numerous playgrounds, picnic facilities, fishing areas, and a nature centre to enjoy.

Local parks and green spaces include:

Entertainment

Its peaceful and quiet streets may seem to be a world away from the hustle and bustle of downtown. However, Mimico is not at all lacking in entertainment, arts, dining, and more. The area is well-known for its booming small business economy, and many Toronto residents seek out the unique artisans and local goods that come from Mimico.

Dining

You can’t discuss the food scene in Mimico without mentioning the iconic SanRemo Bakery or Royal York Meat Market. These Mimico staples are much more than local shops to buy food. They’re a must-visit experience if you love local produce, baked goods, and of course, incredible doughnuts. Local staples like Eden Trattoria and FBI Pizza are also great options if you’re looking for an Italian fix, and you can top it off with homemade ice cream from Ed’s Real Scoop

Nightlife

Although Mimico is well-known for its daytime activities, there is still an abundance of nightlife spots to satisfy your date night needs. Whether it’s grabbing a late-night drink at the Mimico Cruising Club to enjoying the numerous annual events like the Friday Night Mimico Summer Music Series, the neighbourhood certainly does not have a curfew.

Community Events

Despite its proximity to Downtown Toronto, Mimico still retains an excellent “small town” vibe that permeates throughout the entire community. Every year the BIA hosts numerous events that draw out members of the community of all ages. From the Mimico Tulip Festival to the Humber Bay Shores Waterfront Festival, the area has a packed social calendar. There are also events like the Magical Pumpkin Parade in the fall and the Christmas Tree Lighting ceremony and Santa Claus Parade in the winter. The neighbourhood has many partnerships with local schools, arts foundations, and the local Humane Society to foster a warm, welcoming, and close-knit sense of community!

Shopping

Mimico is a haven for small businesses. In addition to locally-owned restaurants and cafes, residents enjoy an abundance of locally-owned and chain retail businesses. The main Mimico shopping districts are on Lake Shore Boulevard and Royal York Road.
